Freshman Experience offers students an opportunity to have fun while learning about local programs

This May Walla Walla High School (WaHi) and WSU GEAR UP brought an exciting Freshman Experience to the class of 2026!

Students participated in 4 mornings of hands-on activities while the 10th-12th graders participated in state testing. Freshmen rotated through 4 experiences over 4 different mornings: May 15, 16, 22, 23rd, 2023. The morning activities included a campus tour at Walla Walla Community College, tour of SEATech Skills Center, Walla Walla Shakespeare demonstration, and a fun leadership course on campus at Walla Walla High School.

Command Sergeant Major Marrero said about the leadership course, “Events included traversing two types of rope bridges over the creek, knot tying classes, and team building events. This created an atmosphere of teamwork and resilience amongst the students and the staff. Staff members also participated in the events.”

At Southeast Area Technical (SEATech) Skills Center, students had an opportunity to learn about Summer School (programs open to current 8th-11th grade students from area high schools for 0.5 credit) and about the half-day high school programs open to Juniors and Seniors during the school year.

Advanced Manufacturing and Welding Technology, Careers in Media & Entertainment, Construction Technology, Criminal Justice, and Health Science Careers are available to Juniors and Seniors during the school year, at SEATech, with students having an opportunity to earn college credit and certifications, while meeting multiple graduation requirements. No prerequisites or prior experience are required, and enrollment is open to students in Dayton, Waitsburg, Prescott, Touchet, College Place, and Walla Walla.

SEATech’s Summer Programs include Crime Scene to Courtroom, Health, Introduction to Manufacturing, and Filmmakers Boot Camp. This year, summer school starts June 20 and concludes on July 7. Students have an opportunity to earn 0.5 credit towards high school graduation in an all day experience over 13 school days. Walla Walla Public Schools serves as the host district for SEATech.
