JROTC Rifle Team succeeds at Washington State CMP Air Rifle State Championship
Walla Walla High School’s JROTC Precision Rifle Team traveled to Spokane, WA over the weekend of February 15th-16th, to compete in the Washington State CMP Air Rifle State Championship. Six shooters from the program competed in the match that consisted of 20 shots from the kneeling position, 20 shots from the prone position and 20 shots from the standing position for a total of 600 points possible for each shooter.
The highest-scoring teams regionally, generally receive invitations to the CMP Western Regional Rifle Championship held in Salt Lake City, Utah in April. That match has the potential to qualify the Blue Devils for the CMP National Championship in Ohio, next July. Statewide, nearly 40 of Washington’s precision class junior marksmen competed in the match.
Cadet Captain Sarah Nelson turned in the highest score for WaHi’s team with a 576, a single point ahead of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Hannah Goin and Cadet Lieutenant Claire Calvert who both turned in scores of 575. At the conclusion of record fire Saturday, the Blue Devil Squad, which also included Cadet Lieutenant Noah Kaheaku, produced a total of 2280 out of 2400 points, coming in second place in Spokane, and third place statewide. Sabertooth Rifle Team, competing in Puyallup, clinched the Washington State Championship with a final score of 2296.
“We were a little disappointed to come in third place,” Said Team Captain Evan Graham after the competition “Normally, a 2280 would win the state match, but the scores in Washington State are really high this year. We actually shot a high enough score to qualify us straight to the CMP National Championship in July, and that’s what we were really after.”
