120 high school JROTC Cadets representing 18 rifle teams from Washington and Oregon met on January 27th at West Valley High School, in Yakima, for the Cascade Mountain League JROTC Drill Meet Rifle Match.  107 Sporter Class shooters and 16 Precision Class shooters filled 5 relays of matches to test their marksmanship skills in the second of 5 contests that the Cascade Mountain League JROTC Conference holds this season.  Shooters competed in 3 position rifle matches consisting of 20 record shots in the prone, standing, and kneeling positions.

In the Sporter Rifle category, Cadet Captain Aviella Wilson produced WaHi’s top score with a 502, followed closely by Cadet Sergeant Sarah Nelson at 501, and Cadet Corporal Sofie Edwards with a 498.  WaHi marksmen swept the Sharpshooter Class, with Nelson and Edwards taking gold and silver respectively, and WaHi’s Cadet Major Angela Lindsey taking bronze behind a 497.

The Blue Devil Sporter Class Team ended the day with a 2nd place finish, totaling 1982 out of 2400, behind Lebanon High School’s Sporter Team.  Scoring members of the team included Wilson and Edwards, as well as Cadet Corporal Jaycee Cox at 496, and Cadet Captain Wyatt Block at 486.

The Blue Devils swept the Precision Class with Cadet Lieutenant Hannah Goin winning gold with a score of 576, Cadet First Sergeant Saphira Rynaski taking silver with a 563, and sophomore Cadet Corporal Claire Calvert a point behind with a 562 for bronze.

At the conclusion of the competition Walla Walla’s Precision Team, consisting of Goin, Rynaski, Calvert, and Rifle Team Captain Micah Vawter took 1st place in the match with a 2261, over the squad from North Salem High School who claimed second place.

“We had to adjust for some unexpected equipment issues.” said Vawter on Saturday, “But we recovered well and this weekend’s performance was very solid. We have a definite focus for training this coming week.”

Walla Walla’s Rifle Teams returned home to begin training for several matches, including the Washington State Junior Olympic 3 Position Air Rifle Match in Puyallup the following weekend, and the Army JROTC National matches being held this year in Salt Lake City
