JROTC September Highlights

JROTC Kicked off the year with many community and school events.

Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Anthony “Tony” Marrero, Sergeant First Class (SFC) Mark Mebes, JROTC Alumni and Boosters, and WaHi’s JROTC Cadets started the school year where they left off last year, with a high level of engagement in the school and community.  The extended learning activities students participate in support the JROTC Mission "To motivate young people to be better citizens."

While the list of activities students have participated in is not all-inclusive, it does highlight the dedication of students, staff, and community members to prepare future graduates to strengthen the community where we work, live, and learn.

  • About 25 cadets and color guard participated in the Fair Parade on September 2, taking 3rd place

  • Color guard and cadets handed out 134 trophies during the Walla Walla Car Show on September 9

  • Color guard for home football games

  • During the week of September 12-15, cadets and cadre were involved in the WaHi "Into the Blue” event.  During this week JROTC provided group leaders, set up two rope bridges, and cadets assisted freshmen who navigated across the creek.

  • JROTC hosted the POW-MIA Remembrance Day event on September 15, in the WaHi Commons. Some distinguished guests were in the audience, including a Veterans Affairs Representative.  The keynote speaker was Jim McGlouhan, a Medal of Honor Recipient from Vietnam.  At the end, he sang "Proud to be an American" to the audience.

  • On September 16, JROTC provided a color guard and volunteers to assist with registering local veterans for the Walla Walla VFW Veteran Stand Down Day.  It is a day where local agencies come together to assist veterans in need within the community by providing counseling, free haircuts, clothing, etc.

  • Cadets have run the concession stand for multiple home volleyball games.

Please join us in extending gratitude and support to our hard-working JROTC instructors, parents, alumni, advisory board members, students, and more who make community engagement possible.  All of the events above occurred before September 18th, 2023, and there are many more to occur over the course of the year.

Thanks again to all who support a strong program!
