Garrison Middle School students win state engineering competition

Garrison Middle School students Wyatt Case, Lars Sandven, Ethan Stiller and Charlie Wutzke took first place in a Washington State engineering competition called TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science).

“It was truly remarkable watching them focus as a team to complete these challenges. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said STEM Teacher Mike Bertram.

This winter, for several weeks after school, the Garrison students formed a team and worked together to collaboratively write an essay about improving urban bicycle safety in Walla Walla. The competition culminated with a 50-question engineering test and practical engineering build. The team was tasked with building a working model of a luggage inspection device that could be used for airport security using only household items.

Sponsored by TSA (Technology Student Association), a Career and Technical Education Service Organization, TEAMS is an annual, theme-based competition that provides middle school and high school students with the opportunity to discover engineering with the potential to make a difference in the world.
